Today we wanted to give a deeper dive on some of the comics and books included in the bundle. We picked out five offerings that we think are really special.
1. Red Sonja by Gail Simone
No writer has quite defined the character of Red Sonja in this modern era like Gail Simone. Comic fans should already be plenty familiar with Simone and her countless hit comics. Runs on Deadpool, Birds of Prey, Secret Six, Wonder Woman, Batgirl and more have built her up as one of the most acclaimed and respected writers in the medium. Her expertise and influence in the superhero genre has recently secured her a role as Chief Architect of Lion Forge's "Catalyst Prime" universe.
Back to our favorite She-Devil though, Gail updated Sonja's origin and personality with modern flavor while keeping the spirit of legendary creators and contributors Robert E. Howard, Roy Thomas, Barry Windsor-Smith and Frank Thorne. Simone's take on the character will be the blueprint for the in development blockbuster film.
2. Army of Darkness by Robert Kirkman
Army of Darkness
was Dynamite's first comic series and big hit. We've been getting groovy with Ash for 15 years! Long before
Elvira, Bettie Page, James Bond, Vampirella, Chaos!, Project Superpowers, John Carter & Dejah Thoris,
! Everything started with the four issue
Army of Darkness: Ashes to Ashes
series. Many superstars really broke out as talents on this franchise, including Nick Bradshaw (
Wolverine and the X-Men, Spidey
), Sanford Greene (
Power Man & Iron Fist,
and more. The
Tales of the Army of Darkness
one-shot bridged a gap between Ash's encounter with the Reanimator and his first official ongoing series.
What makes this issue special is the presence of another superstar creator - the one and only Robert Kirkman! Not only that, but Kirkman is paired with longtime partner and current
artist Ryan Ottley! At this point,
The Walking Dead
were less than 30 issues into their juggernaut runs. Kirkman's dominance in television was but a dream. The issue's cover is also a throwback to the style of industry innovators EC Comics.
3. Battlestar Galactica Volumes 1-2
Battlestar Galactica is one of the most influential science fiction franchises in the world, with two distinct TV shows that have inspired generations of fans, writers and artists. Two of those inspired by the original series were Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning. Both men have long storied careers, both together as a writing team and in different roles separately. Abnett continues to be one of the most in demand writers in comic books with recent acclaimed runs on
as well as selling over two million copies of his
novels. Lanning is an acclaimed inker in addition to his writing skills.
In comic books, Abnett and Lanning have made waves for several intricately plotted sci-fi epics. First they blew people away with their reinvigoration of DC's
Legion of Super-Heroes,
then for years they crafted a whole cosmic line at Marvel with
Annihilation: Conquest, Nova,
and the creation of the modern version of the
Guardians of the Galaxy
that has served as the basis for two films that have grossed well over $500 million each.
Following their conclusion at Marvel, "DnA," as some fans refer to the pair, kicked off a Battlestar Galactica epic of their own. Just in time for the franchise's 35th anniversary, Apollo and Starbuck find themselves in an alternate reality where the Cylons have already decimated the galaxy. Don't miss the follow up volume, with a traitor involved.
4. Undisputed Street Fighter
remains the most iconic fighting game to this day. Both in the minds of the public and at tournaments. For over 30 years, gamers young and old have been practicing their quarter-circles and throwing Hadoukens.
Street Fighter II
was a global phenomenon of the 1990s and the most recent entry,
Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition
just released a year ago. Across spinoffs and crossovers, how many characters have gone toe to toe with Ryu or Chun-Li?
Discover all the in-depth history and analysis on how this unlikely fighter took over the world in
Undisputed Street Fighter.
Writer Steve Hendershot heavily researched this book. Plus, a foreword by
Art of Atari
writer Tim Lapetino (also included in this bundle).
5. Swords of the Swashbucklers
Swords of the Swashbucklers was first published as part of Marvel's groundbreaking graphic novel line in 1984. Other iconic storylines which were first published in this format include
X-Men: God Loves Man Kills, The Death of Captain Marvel, New Mutants
and Thanos creator Jim Starlin's
(also reprinted by Dynamite). Swashbucklers is a space opera with a pirate themed twist, and some strong female protagonists. A 12 issue series followed the graphic novel and Dynamite has reprinted them all in one deluxe volume.
The graphic novel and first few issues are stunningly drawn by Jackson "Butch" Guice
with Geof Isherwood (
and Colleen Doran (
Wonder Woman, Sandman).
Guice's co-creator on this visionary series was writer Bill Mantlo. Writing gigs on
Spectacular Spider-Man, Iron Man, Incredible Hulk,
and more don't even scratch the surface of Mantlo's work. He also co-created Cloak & Dagger and Rocket Raccoon! Unfortunately, Mantlo suffered a medical emergency in 1992. In the spirit of charity and this bundle's partnership with the CBLDF, Mantlo and his family would also appreciate any fans who wish to give back to this monumental creator.
Plus over 300 other issues! Don't miss these limited deals!
