On July 16, BBC news released information about the thirteenth doctor. While many are glad that the TV show is continuing, there are many mixed thoughts among Whovians…more than there usually are when the actor for The Doctor changes.
Jodie Whittaker takes on the role of Doctor Who, the first woman to ever step up to playing the iconic character. The trailer was released on the 16th after Wimbledon finals, a risky and newfangled move as BBC broadcasted the identity of the 13th Doctor.
“It’s more than an honour to play the Doctor. It means remembering everyone I used to be, while stepping forward to embrace everything the Doctor stands for: hope. I can’t wait.” – Jodie Whittaker
Many people, myself including, were expecting the new Doctor to be someone other than a white male, as BBC has decided to incorporate more diversity in its shows. With feminism and diversity on the rise, changing the gender or ethnicity of the next Doctor seemed almost inevident. Jody Whittaker, a British actress and feminist, tells fans not to be “scared” by her gender.
New news also include the taking over of showrunning by Chris Chibnall; Steven Moffatt will no longer be behind the reins.
Whovians, as you can imagine, have had mixed opinions. Some people are willing to try the show for the first time, while others are stepping away, saying they would rather have a male as the Doctor. Taking on a female Doctor Who is definitely a jump, and will take quite a bit of getting used to for people who have been used to seeing the Doctor as a white male season after season. Even Samantha Melton, a feminist, said she does not like the idea of having a female Doctor.
A few actors from former doctors and companions are excited for Jodie Whittaker taking on the role as the new doctor, many of them promising viewers that Whittaker will make a perfect Doctor Who.
“Her audition for the Doctor simply blew us all away. Jodie is an in-demand, funny, inspiring, super-smart force of nature and will bring loads of wit, strength and warmth to the role. The 13th Doctor is on her way.” – Chris Chibnall
Even though I am a new Whovian, I can’t say I wasn’t surprised to learn of the identity of the 13th doctor and I do have my opinions. Personally, it will be something to get used to when I get there, but I’m excited and look forward to seeing how having a female Doctor will turn out.
