The Art of Cosplay – Kanra!

The Art of Cosplay – Kanra!

Greetings fellow nerds! Today we reach across the vast ocean to the beautiful city of Minsk in the gorgeous country of Belarus! Now, given the distance between me (who resides in Sunny Southern California) and Ms. Collins in Belarus I chose to conduct this interview via the internet. It would have been an 18 hour flight one way and “The Chief” refused to pay for the airfare. I know, how’s a reporter suppose to get his scoop when our founder won’t pay for the face to face interviews? Someone needs to send him an email about this, I already did.

I came across Kanra on Instagram while looking for interesting cosplayers, sent her a quick message, and she responded really quick. We had a great conversation through emails and she was super excited about the feature. You wouldn’t have guessed by the stunning pictures, but this woman is very humble. So, without further delay, I present to you all…. Miss Kanra Collins!

Hi Kanra! So, when did you first begin your cosplay hobby?

Hi everyone! My name is Kanra and my cosplay hobby began when I was 16 years old.

Wow, 16? That’s so awesome! I’m sure your imagination went wild with what you wanted to cosplay as. What was your first cosplay outfit?

My first cosplay was Taiga from anime Toradora

That’s brilliant, I’ve never seen the series, but I’ve heard the character is very emotional and extremely popular. Tell us about your cosplay. Has it taught you any useful skills along the way?

Looking back, I remember what a long and difficult way I had to go. Because, while I had just began to cosplay, it was rather difficult to find a good photographer and as a result everything went wrong with my photo shoots. But I didn’t despair with the bad photos, I took everything into my own hands, and taught myself. Now I have the equipment and friends who help me with shooting, and I am retouching photos on my computer. So I can tell everyone with confidence that my cosplay hobby has been extremely useful in teaching me a lot.

Yennefer of Vengerberg! The level of detail here is amazing!

That’s spectacular! I don’t know how many people I’ve spoken to in the last few months about their cosplay and how frustrated they too were when it came to getting quality photo’s. So many people elected to hire professional photographers to get those great shots, but there are also those, like you, who spent the time to teach themselves on how to use a camera correctly and photoshop them afterwards. So your hobby has led to another one.

Where do you get your inspiration from for cosplay?

Anything can inspire me to cosplay. My inspiration can come from books and with the movie. But generally, I prefer to cosplay characters of an anime, video games, and TV series.

Looking at your list of costumes, I can certainly see a very wide range of influence here. How about giving us a complete list of characters that you currently cosplay as?

I’d love to, here is a list of characters in which I’ve cosplayed: Taiga – Toradora, Ariel – The Little Mermaid, Nunnally vi Britannia – Code Geass, Horo – Spice and Wolf, Hatsune Miku, Sora – Yosuga no Sora, Alois Trancy –  Cross – Vampire Knight, Harley Quinn, Eruka Frog – Soul Eater, Scheherazade – Magi, Lollipop Chainsaw, Elsa – Frozen, Yennefer of Vengerberg – Witcher, Full metal panic – Kaname Chidori, Fullmetal Alchemist – Lust, and Game of Thrones – Daenerys.

Oh my gosh, such a long and awesome list! Your level of detail on all of your costumes is amazing! You’ve done a magnificent job on recreating all of your cosplay outfits to look just the original characters. I seriously hope you decide on becoming a professional cosplayer so you can attend conventions around the world.

With so many costumes, where do you find your materials?

I buy almost all of my materials for my suits in shops within my city. We have a rather wide choice of fabrics, but wigs and attributes I ordered on the Internet.

You have so many great characters that you currently cosplay as. If you had a magic wand, and you could wave it in the air to create any costume for cosplay, what would it be?

If I had an opportunity to make any costume of anything I want, then I without a doubt I would cosplay as all the female characters from League of Legends. Each champion in this game is simply unbelievable!

Oh I don’t know about that, I think if you tried hard enough you could certainly pull off one if not many of the female champions from the game. You certainly have the talent for making costumes. I’d hate to see you not try at least.

Do you have any tips for our readers who have that inner cosplayer fighting to get out or for those who are just beginning to cosplay?

I want to tell to all the beginning cosplayers – NEVER GIVE UP! Don’t pay attention to critics and small troubles. I thought many times about wanting to give up on costume play because this is quite an expensive hobby and you don’t always get the result you expected when designing and making your outfit. But every time when I look or I read something new, in my head slips a thought: I SHOULD COSPLAY THIS!

Kanra, you’re truly an inspiration! I have no doubt that there is some person out there who will read this and it will inspire them to work on their cosplay dream too. Thank you so much for allowing Constant Collectible to feature you in this months “The Art of Cosplay”. We look forward to seeing what you design and cosplay in, in the future.
