The Future of Star Wars…

The Future of Star Wars…

star-wars-01 CC

Recently, we here at Constant Collectible, have been doing a ton of speculation about the future of the Star Wars Universe. If you’ve been keeping up with our podcasts on Thursday nights then you’ve seen some of that and when I saw “some” I mean to say that you’ve seen the so-called tip of the ice-burg. We love to speculate especially when new news come out and we do most of it vie texting and emails to one another.

Well, it’s one of those days because Gary Whitta, one of the writers for Disney’s Star Wars Rebels, Rogue One: A Star Wars story, The Book of Eli, and the upcoming Sherlock Holmes 3, recently gave an interview to comingsoon.net about the future of our beloved universe.

In this interview, which you can see in its entirety by clicking the link above, Whitta had these things to say…

“One of the thing things we really want to do at Lucasfilm is create a universe and not keep relying on old legacy characters…” and “Whatever kind of Star Wars films they’re making 10 or 20 years from now, I don’t think they’re going to be relying on the same legacy story elements as we have in the past.”

All of this is fine, especially given that Disney has had such great success with their Star Wars Rebels show, but this wasn’t the disturbing part of the interview. We’ll get back to this idea and concept in a moment. The real issue that I think needs discussing is the part of the interview where he is asked to comment on the originality and the divorcing “from all the stuff George originated but still very much in the spirit of that universe”, his response was extremely accurate and to be honest, quite frightening…

“I think you’ve already seen us get 90% of the way there with “Rogue One.””… “It’s a Star Wars movie with no Jedi! You don’t see a lightsaber once until Vader pops it out at the end. It doesn’t have any spirituality or mysticism… a little bit through Donnie’s character, but it’s very different DNA to the Star Wars films that have come before it.”

A Star Wars movie with no Jedi?! No spirituality or mysticism? Different DNA and being 90% different so far? How can you expect to continue on in or with the Star Wars universe without Jedi (or the Sith for that matter), without any kind of spirituality or mysticism, and being of a different kind of DNA? If you change Star Wars’ DNA then you no longer have Star Wars, you’re left with some sort of cheap knock-off space film franchise. It’s no longer a space opera within the science fiction realm. It’s no longer about “A Long time ago, in a galaxy far far away” story or film. It becomes something entirely different, what that is I have no idea, but I know I’m not excited about it, and it’s depressing to say of the least.

Do I want new content? HELL YEAH I DO!! WE ALL DO!! Do I think we need to continuously use original characters or characters dreamed up in the “Legends Canon”? No, I don’t think that’s necessary, but it is cool and a great idea to see what they can accomplish with some of our very own fan favorites. Plus, it helps to support all these new characters and idea’s with the very foundation of what the galaxy was built on. You can’t create all these new stories and timelines without the existing stories and characters, it’s impossible to do. You could drop all of it, but it would make for some seriously horrible new content that we’d all freaking hate and it wouldn’t really make sense. You can’t change the foundation, it’s literally impossible at this point. When Disney bought out George they decided what would and would not be canon. That’s done, you can’t go back now and try to change the franchise DNA, IT’S IMPOSSIBLE (and yes, i’m yelling at my computer). This foundation was built with Jedi and Sith, with Spirituality and mysticism, and with a rich history of all of those items that they themselves deemed as canon. So ya, bring us new stories, bring us new characters, bring us new worlds, don’t reinvent the wheel, don’t try to foolishly change Star Wars’ DNA, and stop recreating the original trilogy in these new films.

Another big question is this. Is Disney getting too Politically Correct? Are they adjusting their idea’s too much to meet current social standards? I’ve seen a pattern in the books that appears to be forming which is them trying to appeal to a much larger target audience, which I’m currently fine with as long as the content doesn’t suffer. I’ve seen far too many times when a studio or publishing company tries to appease everyone’s opinion or demand and the content gets far too muddy. Star Wars is what it is, there’s no changing it to appease some social groups who demand this or that. Can they make certain adjustments to the social settings within the books, comics, and movies without ruining it? They sure can and I welcome a fresh perspective. I only ask that they not bend over backwards to appease a group or groups of people who aren’t even fans just to meet some person’s entitlement issues or sensitivities. It is after all fiction, it’s not true, not based off of actual events. This is meant to entertain, not inform.

I’m getting sick and tired of several of these fanboy interviewers that constantly agree with whatever the interviewee responds with. No, stick to your moral nerd and geek compasses! I’m also certainly NOT saying or claiming that Max Evry from Comingsoon.net is doing this, he and I differ on only a couple of opinions, but for the most part I think he and I might think alike on our Star Wars ideals. You know what and who I’m talking about though folks, these sell outs that just wanna impress and suck up (and I really wanna say something different here, but won’t) to these corporate boneheads. And that’s what most of these writers and directors are becoming, not all, but most. They’re in it for the money, they claim to be fans, but in reality they’re not. I’m not naming names of who I think is or is not one of these corporate sell outs, but there a lot of them. This may be why I never get to do this as a living one day, which yes I’d love to write reviews and interview these folks full-time and get paid for it, but I’m certainly not gonna sell my soul or my ideals. I think I might have gotten a little side tracked here, sorry.

I do need to say and finish with this. Gary Whitta has accomplished a great deal of work and has contributed immensely to the Star Wars Universe. The Rebels TV show is outstanding and it’s not only the artist who have created beautiful things for us to see, but it’s the outstanding writing that’s made it so great. Keep up the good work good sir!

I really do want to hear what you all have to say about this. Please, let a comment, if you’re too shy then email me at goodygoodwin@constantcollectible.com I really do want to hear from you. We here at Constant Collectible will have a lot of discuss and the more input we get the better. Plus, I feel this may be a great talking point on next weeks podcast, which will be on Thursday night at 8pm pst (Our YouTube Site). Come check us out folks and please do comment with feedback.

Awesome post!!! You bring up problems that I wasn’t aware of with the whole Star Wars franchise. (Though sometimes I just want to ignore all that and just rewatch the original trilogy and pretend it’s the only Star Wars out there lol.) I’m kind of scared and excited at the same time for where Disney takes us!!
