With news reported back in March and Marvel Studios will not attending this years San Diego Comic Con it came as a little shock with the slate of films set to be released. Well it looks like two other studios will be following suite, but it might be a good thing.
Variety is reporting that Sony and Paramount will not be attending this years convention and it feels weird yet right at the same time and you will see why once you look at their films set to be released through July of 2016. With the lineup of films slated by both studios there there are a couple of films from both studios that would get some good participation in Hall H, but not much else.
Sony’s major release schedule:
- Pixels 7/24/15
- Kitchen Sink 9/4/15
- Hotel Transylvania 2 9/25/15
- Goosebumps 10/16/15
- Spectre 11/6/15
- X-Mas 11/25/15
- Concussion (2015) 12/25/15
- The 5th Wave 1/15/16
- Grimsby 3/4/16
- Angry Birds 5/20/16
- Uncharted 6/10/16
- Ghostbusters (2016) 7/22/16
Now looking at this I see two films that should have some presence at this years con is Uncharted (from the video game franchise) and of course Ghostbusters. Paramount seems to have the same issue with their current lineup.
Paramount’s major release schedule:
- Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation 7/31/15
- Captive (2015) 9/18/15
- Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension 10/23/15
- Scouts vs. Zombies 10/30/15
- Rings 11/13/15
- Zoolander 2 2/12/16
- Ben-Hur (2016) 2/26/16
- Untitled Bad Robot Film 3/11/16
- Monster Trucks 3/18/16
- Untitled Mann/Apatow Comedy 4/15/16
- Same Kind of Different as Me 4/29/16
- Friday the 13th (2016) 5/13/16
- Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 6/3/16
- Star Trek 3 7/8/16
With TMNT2 and Star Trek set to be released next year they both fit into the geek realm and should be seem in Hall H, but with filming not started and the possibility of scheduling issues it just might be the issue why they have opted out. Looking at both slates of films from the studios I don’t see anything else that would bring in the hype and maybe it is best that both companies skip.
