From Pages to Screen: The Marvel Cinematic Universe and Martin Freeman

Now that news is buzzing about Martin Freeman joining the cast of Captain America: Civil War the question remains “Who will he play”?

So far as we know the the cast looks like this:

Elizabeth Olsen, (Scarlet Witch) Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Chris Evans (Captain America) , Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye), Sebastian Stan (The Winter Soldier), Anthony Mackie (Falcon), Daniel Brühl (Baron Zemo), Frank Grillo (Crossbones), Chadwick Boseman (Black Panther).

Now if you have read Civil War you know that U.S. government passes the Superhero Registration Act designed to have superpowered characters act under official regulation as agents of the government. Those opposed to the act, led by Captain America, find themselves in conflict with those in support of the act, led by Iron Man, with Spider-Man caught in the middle. Civil War ran from 2006-2007 and was a major crossover throughout the Marvel Universe.

We now know that Spider-man (Not Cast as of yet), but who is Martin Freeman.  With a wide variety of Characters to choose from my money is on Joseph Chapman AKA The Union Jack.

images-1imagesJoseph Chapman’s incarnation as the current Union Jack is unique in that he is not a member of the Falsworth line or part of any British aristocratic family. If you recall James Montgomery Falsworth appears in Captain America: The First Avenger (2011), played by JJ Feild. He is one of several POW’s been held at a HYDRA factory who are liberated by Captain America, and subsequently joins his unit, which gives us our tie-in.
